Tom Browne Jamaica Funk
FRIDAY FLASHBACK: Born and raised in Queens, New York, an up and coming jazz trumpeter named Tom Browne would release his second solo album Love Approach in 1980. Paying homage to his hometown (an area known as Jamaica Queens, not the island of Jamaica), Tom wrote a song called Funkin For Jamaica (New York) that would end up being the albums lead single. With vocal contributions by Toni Smith (who sounded amazingly like Chaka Khan) the song became a favorite on radio stations nationwide. Tom once credited Chaka for releasing her Naughty album that year because he felt it helped his song to reach the Number One spot on the Billboard R B Chart. His song sat in that top position for 4 weeks. Tom would have one more R B hit Thighs High (Grip Your Hips and Move) off of his third album Magic the following year. Here is Funkin For Jamaica. Enjoy
