Un ritratto del più grande scrittore ed intellettuale giapponese del secondo dopoguerra, Yukio Mishima. Fu figura poliedrica, tormentata, amante dell eccesso, poeta raffinatissimo e anatomopatologo delle passioni e dei tormenti umani, scrittore prolifico e di grande successo, dominato, come i suoi connazionali contemporanei, da una devastante scissione tra il passato della tradizione del Sol Levante e il presente della colonizzazione culturale occidentale postbellica. Il suo pubblico seppuku, il suicidio rituale tradizionale, avvenuto il 25 novembre del 1970 nel quartier generale delle forze di difesa giapponesi, ed il suo esempio di intellettuale disposto a non rinnegare sé stesso fino alle estreme conseguenze, lo hanno consegnato da un lato ad un imbarazzato oblio in patria, dall altro ad un vero e proprio culto sotterraneo che però, negli anni ottanta, complice un film biografico diretto da Paul Schrader, ne ha promosso la riscoperta e fino a farlo diventare un icona mainstream.
