Mahmoud Khalil, Columbia University protester, freed from detention after judge s order
Citing extraordinary circumstances, a federal judge on Friday ordered the release of Columbia University activist Mahmoud Khalil. His immigration and civil cases will continue to proceed through the courts. LiveNOWs Andrew Craft has all the latest as this case continues to unfold. U. S. District Judge Michael Farbiarz announced the decision from the bench in New Jersey, responding to a request from Khalils lawyers to free him on bail or, at the very least, move him from a Louisiana jail to New Jersey so he can be closer to his wife and newborn son. On March 8, Khalil, a legal U. S. resident, was detained at his Manhattan apartment building due to his involvement in proPalestinian demonstrations.
