In April 1945 the Second World War was coming to its end in Europe. In accordance with the agreements between the leaders of antiHitler coalition Soviet and American troops were to meet on the Elbe river. From the Soviet Info bureau: The soldiers of the 1st Ukrainian Front and the AngloAmerican troops, allied with the Soviets, split up the front of the German troops, striking from the east and the west, and on 25 April at 13:30, linkedup in the centre of Germany near Torgau. The history of World War II accurately records the place, date and even time of the linkup between Soviet and American troops. However, there were numerous linkups, each of them important in its own way. But they all were imbued with a spirit of soldierly brotherhood and hope for a lasting and happy peace.
