Hot Chocolate Emma 1975 Soul Purrfection Version
I first heard of Hot Chocolate was the epic drama Emma. The stark production with the steady beat and minor notes evoked the despair of the heroine who only wanted to be a star. Around that time Connie Stevens had done a TV movie The Sex Symbol, a racy 70 s revision of the life of Marilyn Monroe and Emma felt like the theme song. Emma also broke Hot Chocolate in the US peaking at a very respectable, 8 in 1974. Written by Errol Brown and Tony Wilson, the song examined themes of lost childhood, suicide and death. Errol related that he was inspired to write the song after the death of his mother at a very young 38. When they went into the studio, Errol was raw from the loss of his mother and his talk singing enhanced the drama as he takes the song to a crescendo by wailing Emmalene at the very end that just about tore my heart out. That emotional signature to the song made it a classic, thanks to Errol Brown.
