The quake was centered about 33 kilometers from Gaziantep, a major city and provincial capital. It was about 26 kilometers from the town of Nurdagi. A second report was later issued by the German Research Centre for Geosciences, which listed it as a magnitude 7. 4 earthquake. The earthquake was followed by another strong temblor and tremors were reportedly being felt as far away as Israel and Lebanon. Local media reports multiple apartment buildings have collapsed after the powerful earthquake. The earthquake lasted about a minute and shattered windows. Many people were gathered out on snowy streets. The city of 800, 000 people is thought to have been one of the worst hit so far by the earthquake, with local reports suggesting the Avşar Hotel had been largely destroyed.
