24h Le Mans 1997 BMW Motorsport Mc Laren F1 GTR Longtail
At the beginning of 1997, BMW Motorsport and McLaren continued their cooperation on McLaren F1 GTR project in order to upgrade the car to be competitive against the new race purpose built rivals in form of MercedesBenz CLK GTR and Porsche 911 GT1. The car received a prolonged bodykit as well as improved aerodynamic elements. Apart from that, powerplant and transmission were also subjects for enhancements a naturally aspirated 600 horsepower BMW V12 engine became more reliable and gearbox was replaced with a sequential one. Le Mans 24 hour race in 1997 saw the Longtail F1 GTRs take 2nd and 3rd places overall and winning GT1 category.
