Seal Trapped in Trash Necklace
Two very unusual entanglements in one rescue run: a bright orange dog chewing toy and a bright green fishing line spool. Both entanglements were visible from far away from the walkway at Cape Cross. The rescuers needed a bit of time to get close enough to the seals without scaring them away, but their patience paid off and they managed to catch both entangled seals. The green spool sits tight, but the rescuers do not want to cut through the thick plastic, they rather slide the seal out of the spool. Luckily it is not too tight yet and the spool comes off. The rescuers have help from Likius, one of the park rangers at Cape Cross. The second seal was caught in a dog toy necklace. The material is a lot softer than the plastic spool and the rescuers use their Leatherman tools to cut it off. The seal seemed to enjoy hanging out in the rescue net, or maybe he was just relieved that he was not eaten by human beings and able to breathe again we will never find out. We will also never find out why people assume
