Dal romanzo di Horace McCoy. Allucinante ritratto della miseria umana durante gli anni della Grande Depressione in un contesto molto atipico e originale, quello della gara di ballo. Che poi in realtà è molto più di una gara di ballo, è una lotta alla sopravvivenza dove l istinto più egoista e animale dell uomo viene fuori ai suoi massimi livelli. Un film semplice e diretto, merito soprattutto delle caratteristiche complementari dei suoi personaggi: soprattutto nei due protagonisti principali Robert e Gloria che formano una coppia straordinaria sotto tutti i punti di vista ma anche nei comprimari come il marinaio, l attrice, la coppia in dolce attesa, ognuno dei quali dà il giusto apporto e la giusta drammaticità alla vicenda. Ma la cosa più disturbante è vedere il pubblico inneggiare ai propri idoli sofferenti che lottano come bestie feroci per un pezzo di pane: un antesignano dei reality show moderni, dove però la miseria dei concorrenti non sta tanto nelle tasche ma nel cervello.
