Ho Tzu Nyen The Cloud of Unknowing (2011)
This is a film by Singaporean artist Ho Tzu Nyen, in which Tzu complicates both western and eastern interpretations of the idea of the as both as a western presence of divine possibility or as the empty void in eastern philosophy, for Tzu, the cloud is a layered a multiple. The film is both immersive and theatrical at the same time. In christian mysticism, the idea of The Cloud of Unknowing stands as a signifier of the divine, and can only be experienced through sensation and not the rational mind. In this film, 8 characters encounter a strange disturbance, a sort of hallucination which appears out of thin air. This film also includes a fog machine which creates fog during the presentation, literally immersing the audience inside the metaphysical cloud (VAC).
