Letterlocking: Mary Queen of Scots last letter, a butterfly lock, England (1587)
Modelled after images of Mary Queen of Scots letter to her brotherinlaw Henri III, King of France in the National Library of Scotland, Mary Queen of Scots completed this letter, her last, at 2am, Wednesday 8 February 1587, six hours prior to her execution (National Library of Scotland). After she finished writing, the two leaves of the bifolium were folded and unfolded crosswise in tandem to make a crease.
