G. Frescobaldi Aria detta la Frescobala (lute)
Girolamo Frescobaldi Aria detta la Frescobalda from Fiori musicali, libro secondo (1627). The Aria is first known set of variation on an original theme. There was a tradition to compose variation on wellknown (anonymfolk) themes like Folia or Romanesca and Frescobaldi was the first who broke this rule and take his own theme.
