The Kavalan: Past and Present, 鳥踏石仔的噶瑪蘭 (1997) dir. Bauki Angaw
The Kavalan family took refuge in Hualien in the 1920s. The first documentary ever made by a Pingpu descendant was produced by a thirdgeneration member of the family. Through depiction of traditional Kavalan ceremonies and collective memories, the film asks us to recognize Pingpu peoples place in Taiwanese history, as well as their suffering and feelings of inferiority during years of forced migration.
