World Helicopter Day aims to raise awareness of the contributions that helicopters make to our society and celebrate the diverse range of people that design, fly and support them. The day is held on the 3rd Sunday of August each year. 2021 will be the seventh year of the event. A helicopter is a type of rotor craft in which lift and thrust are supplied by horizontallyspinning rotors. This allows the helicopter to take off and land vertically, to hover, and to fly forward, backward and laterally. These attributes allow helicopters to be used in congested or isolated areas where fixedwing aircraft and many forms of VTOL (Vertical Take Off and Landing) aircraft cannot perform.
