Is there a duty to obey an unjust law, Sven Gerst
We have an obligation to abstain from committing crime. This seems to be a commonsense statement, however, if one wants to dig deeper, one ought to ask the question where this obligation comes from exactly. Does it originate in some fundamental moral truth or does the duty arise from the various laws that prohibit criminal behavior and that exist in every country and culture Has the law normative power just by being the law What happens if a crime becomes a crime because it is defined as such by the law but that law seems blatantly unjust Do we have an obligation to abide by the law when the law itself is wrong Lecture by the philosopher Sven Gerst, PhD student at Department of Political Economy, Kings College London.
