Tapered Tuning Pins
Tapered tuning pins were used in American pianos for at least the second half of the 19th Centry; falling out of favor in the 1890s. Most often, they are replaced with modern straight sided pins in standard restorations. This video takes a close look at the pins themselves; demonstrates a method for their reinstallation in a new pin block; and finally suggests some possible advantages to the system.
