S. Cutler, D. Hugenroth, Z. Hunter Green Secure Messaging The Guardian s Whistleblowing System 8n13 Oh8c0r4
Abstract: In an era where governments have the ability to eavesdrop on journalists and their sources through mass surveillance infrastructure, The Guardian developed Secure Messaging to provide a secure, anonymous, and easytouse initial contact mechanism. This presentation will detail how Rust language features were instrumental in building the systems secure and performant backend services and how we made an inherently opaque system observable. Presenters: Sam Cutler is the tech lead on the Guardians Secure Messaging project. Before that he worked on search tools for journalists and in the field supporting investigations. Daniel Hugenroth is a computer security researcher and software engineer. His work revolves around applied cryptography, secure protocols, and anonymous communication. Zeke HunterGreen is a Senior Software Engineer on The Guardians Digital Investigations team where he builds journalism tools and directly contributes to journalism projects.
