Hawaii The 50th State 1959, Movietone Moment, 21 August 2020
On this day in 1959, Hawaii became the 50th State of the United States of America. Here is a British Movietone report about the announcement. The United States Congress has admitted Hawaii as the 50th State. The islands were discovered over 180 years ago by the famous British navigator, Captain Cook. In 1898 they were annexed by the United States, and in this century they have become worldfamous as a holiday paradise. Many come to Hawaii to pay tribute to those who died at Pearl Harbour in 1941. Explosions aren t foreign to the islands: the world s largest active volcano makes a vivid contrast to the warm semitropical garden below, and in Hawaii, the milk comes in coconuts.
