Without abandoning the quirky mix of gorgeous, acoustic guitardriven pop tunes and heartrending, miserydriven lyrics with which they re most closely associated, The Sundays STATIC SILENCE finds the band further fleshing out their lush, dreamy mopescapes. With a darker, slower approach more akin to Country than to Britpop, Harriet Wheeler s angelic voice and melancholic lyrics are given a more intimate treatment than on previous albums. Guitarist David Gavurin builds each song with intimate acoustic guitars, breezy voicings, and spacious arrangements, punctuating them with chiming, cascading layers of arpeggiated electric guitar. Inspired instrumental touches abound; on When I m Thinking About You, Gavurin s baroquesounding fingerpicking is accented with a brass section and bird calls. Cry mixes plaintive rhythm guitar and swirling strings, while Another Flavour is a distant, tremolofilled rocker about the ephemeral nature of fashion.
