A Quick Look at a Star Survives Close Call with a Black Hole
A star brushed a giant black hole and survived, according to a new study using NASA s Chandra Xray Observatory and ESA s XMMNewton. Prior to its close encounter with the black hole, the star was a red giant star that had become bloated as it burned through its fuel. Once it was caught by the black hole s gravity, the outer layers were stripped off and left behind a white dwarf star. The white dwarf travels the black hole once every 9 hours and gives off a burst of Xrays on its nearest point in its orb
