Na Paris de 1934, Victoria Grant é uma cantora lírica desempregada, abandonada pelo marido e faminta, que conhece Carroll Todd, um cantor homossexual e hostess, que tinha sido recentemente demitido. Juntos eles articulam um plano, no qual ela se faz passar por um homem, o Conde Victor Grazinski, e que é um transformista e cantor de uma voz forte e potente.
