Coalmens Race (1953)
Stafford, Staffordshire. General view of a garden fete. People wander around looking at stalls and buying things. Children buy lemonade. A group of grimyfaced coalmen arrive on a lorry and jump off the back as it stops. The crowd looks on as they have competitors names hung on their backs and chests, such as Open Cast, Nutty Slack and Ovoids. The competitors take sacks of coal on their backs and walk off across the field in a coal carrying race. C, U of pint glasses being filled with water. One man has to pick up some of the coal he has dropped along the way. Men stop to drink from the glasses. Several shots of men walking around the course. Eventually, Open Cast arrives at the finish and places his sack back on the wagon. Others finish the course. One lies on the ground, breathing hard. Notes, programme and cutting on file.
