Asobi literally means adult game in Japanese and it refers to the superfluous and pleasurable activities of adult life. Games of risk, fight, competition, theatre, dance, all activities in search of euphoria, surrender, exaltation. In Japan, these games are the exclusive privilege of men. Women are, as we speak, not allowed to lose themselves in such useless things. Asobi wants to disclose that most of these adult games are basically driven by voyeurism: whether we talk about pornography, fetishism, or even the comfortable position of the spectator at the theatre. More than a feminist insight in what voyeurism might mean, Asobi is an attempt to go beyond unilateral voyeurism and wants to reveal the physical vulnerability and animal surrender of the dancing human being who knowingly exposes himself to the gaze of others.
