Just Sticks (1934)

Titles read: Just Sticks . Chiddingfold, Surrey. Various shots at an old country factory of men making walking sticks. First we see men carrying bundles of wooden sticks on their shoulders. Men in a workshop shape the sticks, which are laid in hot sand for ten minutes to make them pliable enough to be bent into the crook handle. Sticks that start out crooked are straightened in the same way. The sticks are trimmed of knots on a special machine and tapered at the end for the ferrule (the black bit on the bottom ). Finally, the sticks are sandpapered and polished and ferrules are put on the end. We see 79yearold engineer Tom Mann going home through the countryside on his tricycle.
