Barkey is the Director of the Middle East Program at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars in Washington. He served as a member of the U. S. State Department Policy Planning Staff and is the former chair of the international relations department at Lehigh University. His books include Reluctant Neighbor: Turkey s Role in the Middle East (1997), Turkeys Kurdish Question (1998), and Turkey and the Arab Spring (2011).
