Kevin Volans White Man Sleeps (for two African tuned harpsichords, viola da gamba and percussion)
The original 1982 arrangement of White Man Sleeps by South African composer Kevin Volans. Whilst the content is inspired by traditional African mbira and flute music, the instrumentation is a meeting of two cultural worlds: that of the earliest 17th century Dutch colonizers (embodied in the Baroque harpsichords and viola da gamba) and the indigenous tribes that first inhabited the South African landscape (embodied in the percussive rattles and drums). In addition, the harpsichords are retuned to a traditional African tuning system often found on mbiras. 0:00 First Dance 4:06 Second Dance 7:28 Third Dance 13:28 Fourth Dance 17:18 Fifth Dance Recorded on April 20th 1984 in Cologne, Germany. Performed by Kevin Volans and Robert Hill on harpsichords, Margriet Tindemans on viola da gamba, and Robyn Schulkowsky on rattles, drums.
