Joey Dee and The Starliters (Starlighters) are an American pop music group from the 1960s. Best known for their 1961 hit recording PEPPERMINT TWIST, the group was founded by Joey Dee, born Joseph DiNicola in Passaic, New Jersey June 11, 1940. LORRAINE and the flipside THE GIRL I WALK TO SCHOOL were written by Joey Dee. The songs are his very first recordings as The Starliters. Group members singing on both songs are Rogers Freeman (lead), Ernie Casini (tenor), Joey Dee (baritone), and Vinny Carrao (bass). That same year, 1958, Joey Dee recruited David Brigati to join the group after meeting him during a gig at Garfield High School in New Jersey. David and Joey would subsequently share lead vocal honors for The Starliters, with Joey ultimately becoming the primary lead singer. Another early single for the g
