Copyright circa the early 1960s. Snake handling, also called serpent handling, as shown in the show is a religious rite observed in a small number of isolated churches, mostly in the United States. Participants are typically part of the Holiness, Pentecostals, Charismatics, or other evangelical movements. At least one of the persons shown in the film, serpent handler Lee Valentine, died from snake venom. The practice of snake handling is still exercised in the USA, although some of the most controversial practices, such as drinking snake venom, have been abandoned. (In Kentucky at least, snake handling is now forbidden and subject to fines. ) Opening titles:
