El término cultura de la violación fue acuñado por el feminismo de los 70 en Estados Unidos. Son muchas las teóricas que han escrito sobre ello: Entre ellas la escritora feminista Emily Buchwald. En su libro de 1993 Transforming a rape culture lo explica muy bien: La cultura de la violación es el sistema de creencias, ideas y actitudes que justifica, sostiene y normaliza la existencia de la violencia sexual, y permite que esa violencia se produzca.
