René Magritte, Conservation of The False Mirror

MoMA curator, Anne Umland, and conservator, Michael Duffy, study René Magrittes The False Mirror, in advance of the exhibition, Magritte: The Mystery of the Ordinary, 19261938. Varnish is removed to reveal a soft and deep black. Xray images confirm Magrittes use of zinc and lead paints to emphasize white in two different ways.
