Ode to Whiskey with a couple of doubles
This is the 2nd movement of Bryan Johanson s The Bootlegger s Tale, commissioned by and dedicated to William Kanengiser, as part of the Diaspora Project. Bryan s maternal grandfather emigrated to the US from Ireland, and settled in the Appalacian region. His livelihood was based on a craft he brought from his homeland: spirit distillation. When Prohibition started, he became a bootlegger. Bryan made a musical portrait of stories his grandfather told him, making moonshine in a still, and running from the law. The movements are: Lament for a Broken Still; Ode to Whiskey; Cat and Mouse Interlude; and Head for the Hills. Strongly inspired by Irish and Appalacian fiddle tunes, it s a fun piece to play. It was recently published by D Oz.
