But as chips swelled to tens of thousands of transistors, designers began struggling with their increasing complexity. It threatened the advancement of the industry. Then in 1980, two computer scientists, Carver Mead and Lynn Conway, released a textbook that sparked a semiconductor design paradigm shift.
