Anningella Queen of Cups
Mary Anning was a fossil hunter in the 1800 s, referred to in the classic English tonguetwister she sells sea shells on the sea shore because she used to sell her finds on a makeshift stall on the beach. She was barely acknowledged for her huge contribution to paleontology due to a combination of her gender and social class, and nearly all her finds were passed off as someone else s discovery. But Mary Anning did eventually have something named after her a mollusc genus, known as Anningella. Marta and Joao (the artist duo Von Calhau) were on the same residency, and I felt a strong connection to Marta from very early on and her middle name is Angela. Mine is Ann. So we were Martha Ann and Marta Angela. Mary Anning. The Queen of Cups is a Tarot card that featured heavily in my unconscious while this film was growing inside me.
