In this chilling account from the late 18th century, we uncover the tragic and brutal murder of 22yearold Ann Smith at the hands of Samuel Thorley. On a dark November day in 1776, her dismembered body was discovered in the Howty Brook, near the secluded woodland of Priesty Fields, Congleton. The horror of her savage death sent shockwaves through the local community. Thorley, arrested and swiftly brought to justice, was tried, found guilty, and sentenced to hang in April 1777. But the story didnt end with his execution. As a grim warning to others, his lifeless body was displayed in a gibbet on the very heathland near to where he committed his heinous crimea haunting reminder of justice in an unforgiving time.
