Andrew Wyatt plays Elegiac Romance by John Ireland on the Willis Organ
Assistant director of music at Truro Cathedral, Andrew Wyatt plays Elegiac Romance by John Ireland (18791962) on the Father Willis organ. He says of the piece: This work is a real tourdeforce of the organ, showing the vast dynamic and emotional range that an instrument of this size is capable of. The Romance starts with a quiet theme on the gentle flutes of the organ before becoming more and more emotionally embroiled with the turbulent triplets in the right hand. After a climactic buildup to full organ, the pieces quickly subsides to bring back the main theme, this time played on the clarinet before four ominous chords bring the work to a close. Written in 1902, this takes the place of Irelands first published organ work. He later revised the piece in 1958, making it more playable on smaller organs.
