Ivor Novello was a Welsh composer, actor and playwright, and wrote scores for musical comedies and revues. (Incidentally, he collaborated on an English musical, Theodore Co, with a young Jerome Kern in 1916. ) In total, Novello wrote or cowrote 14 plays, 8 musicals and more than 250 songs. Novellos first hit was Keep the Home Fires Burning, which resonated greatly with people especially during World War I, and he went on to compose other popular songs like Well Gather Lilacs, And Her Mother Came, Too and The Land of MightHaveBeen. Novello was portrayed by Jeremy Northam in the 2001 film, Gosford Park, which also featured a handful of his compositions, including The Land of MightHaveBeen, which was written in 1922.
