Samurai Mania Explore Japanese Armor at TNM Family Gallery Experience Japanese Culture
Summer 2019, at the Tokyo National Museum, an exhibition about Japanese armor was held. Japanese armor was meant to protect samurai on the battlefield, but each piece was also a detailed work of art produced through skilled craftsmanship. Samurai wore eyecatching armor that was artistic as well as practical to distinguish themselves on the battlefield. This exhibition provided an inside look at how armor was made by displaying actual samurai armor alongside reproductions of individual components. A handson area separate from the gallery allowed visitors to take a closer look. By touching, trying on a helmet, and looking at pictures of armored samurai on copies of folding screens, this handson area let visitors imagine how armor was worn. Visitors were even able to try on armor for themselves. Tokyo National Museum:
