Jouissance (3 of 7): An erotics of the negative
Jouissance splits the subject between their conscious beliefs and their modes of enjoying. It is, moreover, typically transgressive in its nature; the very existence of laws creates the temptation, the desire, to break them. Never simply an affect, jouissance is what happens to an affect when it takes on the trajectory of the drive, and not just the drive, but the death drive. Jouissance takes us, in Freud s famous phrase, beyond the pleasure principle. Can we own our Link to board:
