In September 1993, a sensational gold hoard made the coin collection of the Rheinisches Landesmuseum Trier overnight one of the largest collections of ancient Gold coins in the world. During excavation work for a multistorey car park on the grounds of the Mutterhaus der Borromäerinnen hospital, a bucketlike bronze vessel, about 25 cm (10 in) high, was torn apart by an excavator; the vessel has a vertical upper neck and an overlapping lid and originally contained more than 2, 650 Roman gold coins.
