Item title reads: Christened In Cider Devonshire our latest and fastest battle cruiser launched by Lady Mildmay of Devonport, Devon Lady Mildmay stands on a platform near the stern of the ship, while clergymen in robes say prayers. M, S of a large crowd of ship workers, standing below and on the gangplank. Lady Mildmay breaks a cider bottle on the ship s hull and then taps out a peg securing the chains holding the ship. The ship glides down the slipway, watched by the crowd. M, S of the ship with tugs and rowing boats around. Amendment February 2012: A visitor to the website has provided more information. HMS Devonshire was a Countyclass heavy cruiser. 1904 cider is used (the year the previous HMS Devonshire was launched). The clergyman is the Rev. L H Laidman, Chaplain of Devonshire dockyard.
