In 1988, the Armenians of the Nagorno Karabagh enclave today NKR or the Republic of Artsakh, fallowing the fall of the soviet Empire, sought independence from Azerbaijan. by 1990, both Armenia and Azerbaijan were at war over the autonomous region, a conflict which would lead to tens of thousands of casualties, many more wounded, and over a million refugees.
