2 of 3, Glazing, grisaille technique, real time, portrait painting tutorial
2 of 3 This is the second video of 3 a portrait painting tutorial continuing the first glaze on a portrait painting done in a grisaille underpainting. Oil on board. Here I continue working into the painting with velaturas, which are translucent glazes of oil paint, mixed with white. Everything is wet here and I m continually blending in the colours I add. I love this part because I paint a glaze over the hair at around 7:00, and that is really dramatic as it brings the portrait to life in just a quick glaze. I paint portraits to commission using this grisaille technique, and realised its an efficient painting method for oil portraiture, in the sense that once the drawing is completed, it acts as a foundation for the rest of the painting, and there is less room for error. I wanted to share the magical transformation an oil painting undergoes when glazing oil colour over a monotone, or grisaille, underpainting.
