On June 3rd, 1991, Kyushu, Japan, a tsunami of ash and rock descended at over 100 mph from the peak of Mount Unzen consuming everything in its path. , WernerHerzog directs A Requiem for Katia and Maurice Krafft; French volcanologists and filmmakers who died filming on Mount Unzen in June 1991 in a pyroclastic flow. Forty three people were killed, including journalists and local fire and rescue teams. Also killed were, MauriceKrafft and, KatiaKrafft, the legendary French volcanologists who filmed volcanoes and risked their lives to shoot the most spectacular eruptions of the 20th century.
