The work, subtitled a preludecantata, consists mostly of a long and highly pictorial orchestral overture that depicts the sea voyage from Homer s Odyssey: Ulysses, thrown by Poseidon into the sea, is protected by the veil of the goddess Leucothea, daughter of Cadmus.
