This magical song tells how a young maiden is seduced and impregnated by the wild shade (magical spirit) Tam Lin. She attempts to abort the child by eating the poison rose, but Tam Lin asks her instead to make him a real gentleman by holding him in her arms as he metamorphoses between various ferocious beasts. She s rewarded for her courage when he becomes a gentleman who will marry her and thus provide for her child.
