On the Eastern Front during World War II, both German and Russian snipers were officially authorized to use explosive spottertype rifle ammunition (BPatrone for Germans, PZ for Russians) on human targets. The projectiles in the ammunition contain a charge of highly reactive phosphorus and a priming compound, and explode on impact.
