China begins drilling one of the world s deepest holes to explore the Earth s crust

The hole is located in the hinterlands of the Taklimakan Desert, Chinas largest desert. Hailed as a landmark in the countrys deepearth exploration, the borehole will allow scientists to hunt for new discoveries inside the Earth, as well as seek oil and gas resources.
