Studio Glimpses The Process of Painting From Drawing to Underpainting to Oil Painting to Display
The Making of the Oil Painting Here I Am Candy Wind Hibiscus by the artist, Mary Ahern. Live flowers are the inspiration but there are many steps in the workflow of creating a work of art. I start by making a tonal drawing using graphite then upscale the drawing to a larger canvas. Following that, I make a neutral underpainting on the canvas using the drawing lights darks as the reference. The layers of oil painting are lightly applied on top using thin glazing techniques. Finally, I frame my work in neutral wooden floating frames for a contemporary but realistic modern art presentation.
