Joel hits, but does not seriously injure, a 108yearold man, named Ned Svenborg, with his pickup truck late one night. In flashbacks, the man tells residents the story of Cicely s founders, two lesbians, Cicely and Roslyn. In 1908, these freethinking women drove into the thennameless frontier town to escape Montana s conservatism. With civility and dignity, they realize a utopian dream, transforming the town into a Parisianstyle artists colony, complete with literary salon, theater and dance.
