Raw Silk: Uzbekistan Travels Part II: Aral Qaraqalpaqstan
Drive from Nukus to Moynaq across the desolation of Qaraqalpaqstan to the desert that used to be the Aral Sea (its feeding waters diverted for cotton monoculture in Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan), the trawlers of its fishing fleet rusting amongst demo camels. Qaraqalpaq village scenes women cooking non in tandyr. Finally a pocket of water in a lake left back from the receding Aral, now brimming due to a dam failure upstream the Amu Darya in Tajikistan.
